Famous world map preserved in new airport home

SALT LAKE CITY – The popular world map from the old Salt Lake City Airport has been safely transported to its new home.

This home is located in Hall B of the new airport, right next to the escalator in the central tunnel.

John Kunz was the stonemason who helped with the job. He says that at first they weren’t sure if they could safely remove and store the 64-year-old card, which used to be located near the TSA checkpoint.

“When we took out the first piece and realized that there was a tissue separation as crack isolation, we were sure, ‘OK, we can do this,'” Kunz said.

Kunz says they had to cut the huge stone map into 75 pieces. Each of those pieces weighed about 400 pounds.

The map lay in storage for several years until the part of the airport where it is now located was built.

“It was a great pleasure to work on the map and learn about its history and experience its continued development,” said Kunz.

Kunz says now that it’s reassembled, it could “last for hundreds of years. It could last forever.”

The area of the airport where the map is located will be opened to the public on October 22nd.
