Pirates activate 2B Nick Gonzales, recall C Henry Davis and place Joey Bart on the 10-day IL

Three of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ most promising young players were in the locker room on Monday as the club made a number of roster changes that were overshadowed by Oneil Cruz’s move to center field.

Second baseman Nick Gonzales was activated from the 10-day injured list and will start Monday’s game against the Chicago Cubs.

Catcher Henry Davis was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis to replace Joey Bart, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain.

The Pirates have designated right-handed pitcher Jake Woodford for assignment and are expected to activate right-handed rookie Jared Jones from the 15-day IL on Tuesday.

Gonzales, who has been out since July 28 with a strained left groin, hit 5-of-15 batters, one home run and four runs scored in four games while rehabbing for Triple-A Indianapolis.

“It was a good feeling to be back on the field and get back on my feet,” Gonzales said. “Obviously, you have to get your confidence back after a soft tissue injury like that. And running, everything, had some firsts-to-thirds and firsts-to-home runs. So it was good.”

Davis posted a .307 batting average with 15 doubles, 13 home runs, 43 RBIs and a .956 OPS in 57 games at Triple-A Indianapolis this season. He reached base safely in his final 12 games, going 17-of-49 (.347).

Jones, who has been out since July 4 with a right lat injury, was 5-6 with a 3.56 ERA and 1.11 WHIP, averaging 9.7 strikeouts per nine innings in 91 innings in 16 starts before his injury. He threw five scoreless innings, recorded 10 strikeouts and a walk, and allowed one hit in his final rehabilitation start against the Columbus Clippers on Aug. 20.

“Obviously, a good game gives your ego a little boost,” Jones said. “But I’m just really excited to be back. … You want to be on the field all season. Not playing baseball for about two months, that wasn’t fun.”
