Funeral for Jay Slater, who died in Tenerife, takes place

The 19-year-old will be buried in Accrington, Lancashire

The funeral of British teenager Jay Slater, who died while on holiday in Tenerife, will take place on Saturday in Accrington, Lancashire.

Well-wishers attending the funeral were asked to wear something blue in his memory.

Mr Slater’s relatives have also asked that instead of flowers, people could donate to LBT Global, an overseas crisis relief charity that has helped his family through their grief.

A post-mortem examination revealed that the 19-year-old from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, who died on June 17, had died from traumatic head injuries consistent with a fall from a height.

His death would have occurred instantly.

A celebration of life service will be held prior to burial at Accrington Cemetery Chapel.

The family will provide flowers, but “if anyone would like to bring a single rose to Jay’s place, they are welcome,” his relatives said in a statement released through LBT Global.

Mr Slater, an apprentice bricklayer, was also remembered in a memorial speech by his family, which described the most important events and passions of his life.

They said: “A loving son of Debbie and Warren, a cherished brother of Zak and brother-in-law of Jessica, a cherished grandson of Dawn, June and the late Dougie, a beloved nephew of Glen and Katie, a dear cousin of Maddie and Tillie and a loyal friend to many. Jay will be greatly missed by all who knew him.”

The family said: “After leaving Rhyddings High School, Jay began an apprenticeship as a bricklayer with the PH Build group, a job which he really enjoyed.

“At the tender age of five, Jay started playing football for Huncoat United FC until he was 17 and also played a few seasons with St. Joseph’s Sunday team.

“He also enjoyed spending time with his friends.

“Jay’s love of music and dance began at a very young age. He loved attending music festivals and events around the country and also loved socializing and meeting new people.”

Before his disappearance, Mr Slater was attending the NRG music festival with two friends. His last known whereabouts were the Rural de Teno Park in the north of the Canary Island, about 11 hours’ walk from his accommodation.

He had driven to an Airbnb in Masca after a night of drinking, but the two men who were said to have rented the property were later classified as “not relevant” to the case.

Spain’s Guardia Civil said Mr Slater may have fallen in the steep and inaccessible area where he was found.
