A missing Massachusetts man was found dead in South Carolina on Monday, authorities said.

Stanley Kotowski was on vacation on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, when he was last seen on August 16, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said.

Around 11:30 a.m. Monday, Beaufort authorities responded to reports of suspicious activity at a home on Hilton Head Island, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. After investigating, officers found a body underneath a nearby home, the statement said.

Officials believe the body is that of Kotowski. He was 60 years old.

An autopsy on Tuesday will confirm the identity of the body and determine the victim’s cause of death, the sheriff’s office said.

Kotowski’s family, of Methuen, told Boston 25 News he got out of their rental apartment and disappeared. He suffered from anxiety, they said, although it was unclear if that was related to his disappearance.
