Why the Detroit Lions have the “best” long snapper in the NFL

Why the Detroit Lions have the “best” long snapper in the NFL

One of the most exciting position battles during the entire Detroit Lions training camp concerned the long snapper position.

Scott Daly, who replaced Don Muhlbach in 2021, has reportedly been notified of his release. The veteran coached his back this year after suffering a knee injury in 2023.

Hogan Hatten, who went undrafted this year, will now take over the position. Detroit’s coaching staff has likely recognized the value the athletic long snapper can bring in coverage situations as well.

“One of the reasons we wanted to get Hogan was his intriguing coverage ability,” Dan Campbell said when discussing the close call with Daly. “He played linebacker in college, so he runs pretty well and has some feel for the football. You saw him play a couple defensive snaps for us, a couple. We needed him where we were lined up at linebacker to finish the game. And that’s what he has.”

Former Idaho kicker/punter Logan Prescott said, “Detroit has the best snapper in the league” after learning Hatten made the team.

Prescott also told Lions On SI that Hatten has shown “dedication to the craft.” Hogan came to Idaho as a linebacker and was in the starting lineup early on. He was a natural and once he was in the starting lineup, he never let it go. His ability to cover, break and punt is an advantage most teams don’t have. He is an athlete through and through.”

The next step in Hatten’s career is to prove that he can perform and keep his composure under pressure.

In a high-pressure season with extremely high expectations, Detroit cannot afford to miss crucial punts or field goals.
