Stop & Shop stops selling cigarettes and tobacco

PROVIDENCE, RI (WPRI) — Stop & Shop announced Monday that its stores will stop selling cigarettes and tobacco products through August 31 as part of its “commitment to community well-being.”

The grocery store chain plans to stop selling tobacco in its 360 stores in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey.

“Our responsibility as a grocery retailer extends far beyond our shelves,” said Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid. “We want to promote the health and well-being of the communities we serve, and this exit from tobacco is another way to achieve that goal.”

To further encourage customers to quit smoking, Stop & Shop is holding two cigarette buyback campaigns on August 28 in Boston, Massachusetts and Staten Island, New York.

The first 100 participants to bring an unopened pack or carton of cigarettes will receive a Stop & Shop gift card and other resources such as healthy snacks, smoking cessation materials and $10 discount coupons for Nicorette.
