DMV restructuring shows new efficiencies to further shorten waiting times

The office of Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is converting its Taylorville facility into a “one-stop shop” concept that offers shorter wait times and greater efficiency.

As part of the renovation, signage has also been updated to create a more logical flow and help customers know where to go, Foreign Minister Alexi Giannoulias announced today.

The DMV will be temporarily closed from August 23-29 while renovations are being done. During this time, a temporary “pop-up” location at 121 W. Vine St. will serve customers.

As part of the Department of State’s ongoing modernization efforts, the new DMV experience will save customers significant time and multiple steps by offering both vehicle and driver services at a single service counter.

“Since taking office, we have made it our top priority to provide exceptional customer service and reduce lines and wait times,” Giannoulias said. “Our Taylorville facility will be one of the first to receive this transformation, which will give it a modern feel while utilizing new technologies to increase efficiency.”

Driver and vehicle services staff at the “One Stop Shop” DMVs are now cross-trained to provide both areas of service. The office has also redesigned the customer service counters and signage to create a more logical flow.

Customers can take advantage of the following services at a single service counter:

• Apply for a REAL ID or a new driver’s license or national identity card.

• Renewal of a driving license, identity card or temporary visitor’s license (TVDL).

• Register your vehicle or renew its registration and obtain vehicle stickers.

• Order a new license plate.

• Join the Illinois Organ and Tissue Donor Registry.
