How to shop in chic NYC style at Zara, J.Crew and Nordstrom

Woman in black suit.

Even though I no longer live in New York City, I still love going there to visit my favorite restaurants, shop, watch shows, and of course, get inspired by New York street style. I just got back from a trip and discovered so many amazing looks and items that I now constantly think about and inspire my own wardrobe and the pieces I choose for my content.

Below, you’ll find the five looks and items I saw everywhere—uptown, downtown, and even in the lobby of my hotel. I stayed at one of Marriott’s Luxury Collection hotels, and I swear I saw at least five people wearing a certain denim silhouette every day. I should also mention that everything I like happens to be available at three favorite retailers: J.Crew, Zara, and Nordstrom. Keep scrolling to check out the items in question, as well as a wealth of shopping recommendations from this trio of retailers.

Wide leg jeans

Barrel leg jeans have been a huge trend over the past few months. As New Yorkers proved on my trip, the look isn’t going away anytime soon. It’s such a fresh denim update and adds a cool twist to any look. Wide leg jeans have also been a classic.

Oversized shirts

Oversized shirts are one of my wardrobe staples and I’ve seen them all over New York City, paired with everything from short shorts to pants to skirts.

Maxi dresses/skirts

A maxi dress or skirt is effortlessly chic. The look is modern yet classic. I’ve seen them especially paired with flat Mary Janes and ballet flats.

Red

Burgundy will be a big color trend this fall, but bright red will continue to be popular as I’ve seen it on all sorts of clothing items from separates to shoes to bags.

Chic tailoring

In New York City, I definitely noticed tailored silhouettes, especially structured pieces and tailored blazers.
