Airports concerned after suspected cyberattack shuts down Seattle airport ahead of Labor Day

ATLANTA, Georgia (Atlanta News First) – A suspected cyberattack is causing massive disruptions at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Even if the cyberattack did not occur at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, a similar event at another major airport could have a significant impact on air traffic.

Over the weekend, the Port of Seattle, which operates the airport, experienced a disruption in its computer systems. Many passengers searching for flight information on the SEA website were greeted with an error message. Although this only affects one airport, the CrowdStrike crash of last month is still fresh in the minds of many air travelers. A faulty software update brought down companies worldwide – including Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines.

Security experts warn that these increasing attacks could be test runs.

“Airports are a big target for hackers because they disrupt a lot of people’s lives,” said Emil Sayegh, CEO of a technology company and cybersecurity expert. “I think people want to find out if they can attack our critical infrastructure.”

Seattle is still working to get all systems back online, so if you are traveling and Seattle is your final destination, keep this in mind.

Looking ahead to this weekend, the TSA expects the number of travelers on Labor Day to be more than 8 percent higher than last year.
