2 dead, 1 injured after aircraft tire explodes at ATL airport: report

ATLANTA, GA — A Delta Air Lines employee and a contract worker were killed Tuesday morning when a tire blew at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Channel 2 Action News reported.

A third person, another Delta employee, was injured in the incident. The news agency reported that the tire had just been removed from a plane arriving in Atlanta from Las Vegas when it exploded in the maintenance area.

Delta issued the following statement to Channel 2:

“The Delta family is deeply saddened by the loss of two team members and the injury of another following an incident this morning at the Atlanta Technical Operations Maintenance facility (TOC 3). We have pledged our full support to family members and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. The Delta family is grateful for the quick action of the first responders and medical teams on site. We are now working with local authorities and conducting a full investigation to determine what happened.”
