A tire explosion in the maintenance area of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta Two people died early Tuesday morning. WSB-TV reports that the tire exploded as workers attempted to remove it from the plane. The explosion killed both a Delta employee and a contractor. A third person, also a Delta employee, was seriously injured, but their condition is currently unknown. In a statement, Delta said:

The Delta family is deeply saddened by the loss of two team members and the injury of another following an incident this morning at the Atlanta Technical Operations Maintenance facility (TOC 3). We have pledged our full support to family members and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.

The Delta family is grateful for the quick action of first responders and medical teams on the scene. We are now working with local authorities and conducting a full investigation to determine what happened.

It is currently unclear what caused the explosion and the names of the victims have not been released. Airport officials said operations were able to continue despite the incident. Mayor Andre Dickens also released a statement saying, “I extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased Delta employees. My thoughts are also with the injured and I hope for their speedy and full recovery. AFRD, APD and HJAIA teams are on site and working diligently to manage the situation.”

Earlier this year, Delta had another tire problem in Atlanta. In January a Boeing 757 lost its front wheel shortly before takeoff from Hartsfield-Jackson. The flight was immediately canceled and everyone on board was able to safely exit the plane. Although no one is happy about a canceled flight, they were probably at least glad that someone had noticed before takeoff.
