Black Restaurant Week LA puts black businesses in the spotlight

Black Restaurant Week LA puts black businesses in the spotlight

Black restaurants from Burbank to Long Beach are in the spotlight during Black Restaurant Week LA, which runs August 23 to September 1.

1010 Wine and Events was one of the restaurants featured on Good Day LA. It opened in August 2021 and is the first and only wine bar in Inglewood. Additionally, they carry the largest selection of black-owned wines in California.

“Inglewood is where we were born and raised, and we still live here, so I think it’s really cool to have a place in the city we grew up in and see the people we grew up with come and visit our business,” said Leslie Jones, co-owner of 1010 Wine and Events.

“I think it’s a really great opportunity to join a coalition of other Black business owners whose successes you can rely on and highlight, and I think Black Restaurant Week provides just that,” she added.

Just over a mile south of 1010 Wine and Events is Dulan’s Soul Food Kitchen, which has been a staple at the venue for decades. The Crenshaw location in South LA’s Hyde Park neighborhood has been around for over 30 years, while the Inglewood location opened in 1999.

Fried chicken, sweet potatoes, okra, macaroni and cheese are just some of the dishes they offer that bring the taste of the South to the city of Angeles.

“We really tried to build something beautiful so that we could serve the community well,” explained owner Greg Dulan. “It’s very rewarding to be able to serve the community that I grew up in.”

Dulan’s has also served President Joe Biden and even King Charles.

“We do our best every day to make sure everyone feels welcome and at home and enjoys our food,” Dulan said.

Similar weeks to support black businesses are taking place in other US cities, including Atlanta, New York and Washington DC.
