Zelensky decided to leave Moldova without Russian gas and electricity — EADaily, August 27, 2024 — Politics, Russia

The Ukrainian authorities do not intend to reconsider the decision to stop the transit of Russian gas through their territory after the expiration of the contract, which ends on January 1, 2025. This was stated by the head of the Kyiv regime, Vladimir Zelensky, today, August 27.

According to him, Ukraine could allow gas transit to Europe, but from other suppliers – “the gas must not come from Russia”.

“Nobody will extend the agreement with Russia, that’s it. As for the gas transit of other companies, if the request of some of our European colleagues still exists (and we are all in the European Union), we will consider their request,” Zelensky said.

As a reminder, Moldova currently receives about 90% of its electricity from Pridnestrovie MoldGRES (Inter RAO company), to which it sends all the gas supplied by Gazprom (5.7 million cubic meters of gas per day) to the region. This transit is carried out through the Sudzha metering station, which came under the control of militants of the Kyiv regime as a result of the attack by the Ukrainian armed forces on the Kursk region.

Previously, Chisinau tried to buy electricity in Romania, but through Ukraine, as it does not yet have a direct connection to the European transmission system operator network (ENTSO-E). The neighboring country’s energy system is currently in a critical state, and the price of electricity in Bucharest is several times higher than that of MoldGRES.

As EADaily As reported, Moldovan Energy Minister Viktor Parlikov recently stated that in case of suspension of Russian gas transit through Ukraine, Moldova would need two days to reroute transit through the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline. According to the official, during the conversion period, the republic can keep the gas reserves that are currently in the pipeline. The government of Moldova is also working on the issue of gas supplies from the United States.

Currently, Moldova’s gas stored in Ukraine and Romania is barely enough to last through the first days of winter. This month, purchases of the blue fuel by European traders were suspended due to the increased price. In these conditions, the Moldovan government has declared an alarm regime in the energy sector.
