Second phase of Shrewsbury station to begin

The second phase of work to improve the area in front of Shrewsbury railway station is set to begin.

As part of the work, old pavement slabs will be replaced and traffic calming measures will be taken, including closing the right lane in front of the station.

At the same time, similar work is taking place on a connecting road.

Construction work is scheduled to begin on September 2nd and it is hoped that both areas will be largely completed before Christmas.

The works cover the western side of Castle Foregate, from the Cross Street approach to Smithfield Road.

The second set of works will be carried out on the wide paved area of Chester Street near the Smithfield Road bus stop.

It is part of a larger ‘Station Quarter’ project being carried out on behalf of Shropshire Council, funded by the Government and expected to be completed in summer 2025.

Phase one began in June and resulted in the closure of the left lane in front of the station.

“The project team has worked hard to reduce traffic congestion as much as possible – and has put a number of measures in place to do so. This will continue throughout the construction period of the project,” said Dan Morris of Shropshire Council.

He added that drivers should not drive through red lights at the temporary traffic lights as this would cause the system to display red at all traffic lights for a short time.

“This is a safety measure that allows such vehicles to leave the area. However, the knock-on effect is that the extended time that traffic is held back only impacts the queues.”

“A few extra seconds at red lights can have a big impact on traffic flow.”
