Passengers sweat in the purgatory of Penn Station while waiting for the nonexistent free NJ Transit trains

New Jersey Transit, where the trains are free but you’ll have to channel your inner Indiana Jones to survive the ride.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to get a free ride with a dash of chaos, just ask the nice folks trying to navigate Newark’s Penn Station this week. NJ Transit is offering free rides for a week, probably as a feel-good gesture. Sounds like a dream, right? Except there’s one small catch: The trains aren’t running.

Yes, you read that right. The trains are free because they don’t go anywhere. It’s like getting a golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s factory only to find that the chocolate river has dried up.

Commuters hoping to take advantage of this rare opportunity to save a few bucks are instead stuck in the purgatory that is Penn Station. Delays are rampant and the station is packed with confused travelers wandering aimlessly, probably questioning their life choices. And who can blame them? It’s like arriving at a buffet and realizing the food has run out.

Jason Hartelius, clearly not impressed with the situation, took to Twitter to express his frustration. “It’s hard to ride the train for free WHEN THE TRAINS ARE NOT RUNNING!!!” he tweeted, summing up what everyone else was thinking. He added that Penn Station was “CHAOS,” and honestly, is there a better word for it?

The cherry on top is his sarcastic call out to NJ Transit for managing to screw up even the free “reparation rides.” But that’s not all. Jason also called on Governor Murphy to offer even more free rides to make up for this debacle.

So if you’re planning on taking a free train ride in New Jersey this week, maybe pack some snacks and a good book and prepare for the adventure of a lifetime – or at least a lot of waiting.

New Jersey Transit’s website states that all delays are due to Amtrak’s work in the Hudson River tunnels.
