Packers place RB AJ Dillon on injured list, ending season

The 2024 season for Green Bay Packers running back AJ Dillon is over. The team placed Dillon, who suffered his second stinger injury in nine months during a practice earlier this month, on the injured list on Tuesday with no plan to return, ending his season.

New NFL rules allow teams to place up to two players on the injured list with the option to return at the final reduction to 53 players. The Packers used that option for defensive lineman Jonathan Ford, but not for Dillon and tight end Tyler Davis.

Dillon suffered a punctured nerve during the Packers’ joint practice with the Denver Broncos. He had previously suffered a punctured nerve during the Packers’ victory over the Minnesota Vikings last December. The nerve injury can affect the strength and function of a person’s arms and hands.

Packers coach Matt LaFleur was uncertain whether Dillon would be ready for Week 1 when asked about the season finale, saying multiple times that the team was still gathering information and opinions on Dillon’s injury. It’s possible the final diagnosis was much worse than initially thought.

Dillon, a second-round pick of the Packers in 2020, returned to Green Bay on a one-year contract. This procedural roster move could end his time with the Packers. In fact, it’s possible that Dillon and the Packers could eventually agree to an injury settlement that takes him off injured reserve.

The Packers kept rookies MarShawn Lloyd and Emanuel Wilson on the original 53-man roster behind starter Josh Jacobs.

Dillon played 60 games for the Packers over four seasons. He ran 597 times for 2,428 yards and 16 touchdowns while catching 86 passes for 763 yards and two touchdowns. Last season, Dillon ran for 613 yards but averaged just 3.4 yards per attempt.
