Coroner identifies dead man found in burning car in Walmart parking lot

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — The McHenry County Coroner’s Office has determined the identity of a 68-year-old man found dead in a burning car in the Walmart parking lot in Crystal Lake last week.

The man was identified as Hal Manta, according to the medical examiner’s office. Manta has no permanent address, officials said.

Emergency crews were called to the scene of the fire in the parking lot at 1205 S. Route 31 around 5:40 a.m. on Thursday, police said. Witnesses tried several times to get Manta out of the car, but were unable to do so due to the intensity of the fire, police said in a news release.
