49ers make surprising announcement and place running back on the injured list, which means the end of the season for him

It was certainly a busy day in the National Football League.

Teams across the league had to thoroughly evaluate their rosters and whittle them down to just 53 players. This is no easy task after a long summer of expanding rosters through free agents, transfers and the National Football League Draft.

Franchises had to make difficult decisions that resulted in hundreds of players being released and some even being traded before the deadline.

The San Francisco 49ers had a busy day and had to make some difficult decisions. One announcement that surprised some people, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, was that running back Elijah Mitchell was placed on the injured list, meaning his season is over.

“The 49ers have placed RB Elijah Mitchell on the injured list, which means season-ending for them,” Schefter said.

Mitchell has been extremely unlucky when it comes to injuries. He was selected by the 49ers in the sixth round of the 2021 National Football League Draft and made an immediate impact as a rookie, amassing nearly 1,000 rushing yards in just 11 games played.

However, a spate of injuries has sidelined him in recent years, and the signing of Christian McCaffrey has also significantly changed his expected role. He will now miss the entire 2024 season after it looked like he would soon play a significant role behind McCaffrey.

Hopefully he can get back on track and be fully healthy when the 2025 season starts in a year.
