Ferrari stolen in armed burglary in RI discovered in Florida – NECN

A Ferrari stolen three days ago in an armed robbery in Cranston, Rhode Island, has been recovered in Florida, where authorities arrested one of the two suspects on Tuesday. The second suspect was later arrested in Rhode Island.

Cranston police say the whole ordeal began Saturday when patrol officers were dispatched to the home at 66 Crest Drive around 3:20 a.m. Residents told officers that two masked men armed with handguns entered the home through an unlocked door and demanded the keys to a 2018 Ferrari Spider convertible that was parked in the garage, as well as a Chevy Corvette.

According to police, it was clear that the suspects had detailed knowledge of the house and the vehicles they were looking for, and this was not a random act.

According to police, the residents of the home that was targeted gave the suspects the keys to both vehicles, and they fled in the Ferrari. The Corvette was found unmolested nearby where the owner had parked it.

A Cranston Police flock camera located the stolen Ferrari the day after the Cranston incident, but responding officers were unable to find it Sunday.

However, investigators were able to identify two suspects, one of whom police said was indirectly connected to one of the residents, Cranston police said. He had previously been at the Crest Drive home and knew where the keys to both vehicles were kept.

The police then issued a bulletin about the stolen Ferrari to the surrounding police stations and several authorities were called in.

A Rhode Island State Trooper spotted the vehicle and attempted to stop it Monday night, but the driver led several officers on a chase through Rhode Island and Connecticut before police eventually lost sight of him.

Later Monday evening, New York State Police pursued the Ferrari, but the driver again evaded arrest.

Additionally, Cranston police issued arrest warrants Monday evening for 20-year-old Jonathan Costa of Cranston and 18-year-old Logan Slezak of Pawtucket for burglary with criminal intent, use of a firearm in the commission of a violent crime and conspiracy.

Cranston Detectives worked with the State Police Fugitive Violent Crime Task Force and the U.S. Marshalls to work toward the arrest of the two suspects.

Tuesday afternoon, the St. John’s County Sheriff’s Office in Florida said officers were searching for the stolen Ferrari with Florida license plate CCC1 that led authorities on a chase on I-95 in Flagler County. The driver was said to be armed and dangerous and was wanted out of state in connection with the crime.

Pedro Menendez High School and Southwoods Elementary were briefly cordoned off as a precautionary measure during the search, but classes have since resumed.

Shortly after 2 p.m., sheriffs from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Department in Florida spotted the stolen Ferrari after receiving an alert from a license plate reader. The driver refused to stop for police and sped away.

A helicopter was used to pursue the Ferrari and although the suspect initially managed to evade arrest, he was later pursued to a residence on Royal Palm Lane where the Ferrari was found unoccupied and hidden under a tarp.

There was a heavy police presence in the area and people were asked to avoid the area.

Sheriffs surrounded the house and were able to arrest Costa immediately, police said. The second suspect, Slezak, was not known to be in the vehicle and was probably not in Flagler County.

Cranston police said later Tuesday that Slezak had been taken into custody in Rhode Island.

“The suspects were difficult to apprehend because they were driving recklessly and at dangerously high speeds (over 130 mph) to evade arrest, endangering all law enforcement officers and innocent motorists, and were armed and dangerous,” said Major Todd Patalano in a press release. “The Cranston Police Department also thanked residents and neighbors for their cooperation and patience in helping us bring this matter to a quick conclusion.”

It was not immediately clear if Costa or Slezak have a lawyer, when they are due to appear in court for the first time or if further charges are possible. No further information has been provided.
