Extreme heat leads to closure of restaurants, schools and health departments

Extreme heat leads to closure of restaurants, schools and health departments

FREMONT, Ohio (WTVG) – At VanNess’ Time Out Sports Bar, the hot weather struck at the worst possible time.

“This is another problem for a small business owner,” says owner Dean VanNess. “It’s just too hot today to have employees working.”

VanNess said his air conditioning stopped working on August 27, 2024. That day, the perceived temperature rose to over 38 degrees.

His new system is already on order but is expected to arrive later this week, so VanNess has decided to close until the replacement HVAC system can be put into service.

“We’re just going to try to keep the fans running, keep the equipment cool and save what we have here,” VanNess added.

Four Tiffin City Schools buildings, including Tiffin Columbian High School, do not have central air conditioning, so Superintendent Jerry Nadeau and other administrators have decided to delay the first day of school and cancel classes for two days.

“We are trying to start the school year on a positive note and given the extreme heat, we believe we made the right decision,” Nadeau said.

Tiffin City Schools will use two disaster days to begin the school year. The official start of the school year in the district is now Thursday, August 29, 2024.

Meanwhile, the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department also closed for the day. A spokesperson said this was due to problems with the air conditioning system.

Full press release:

“Due to exceptionally high temperatures, we have made the difficult decision to temporarily close the Health Department building at 635 N. Erie St., Toledo, to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone.

The health department’s air conditioning system does not work efficiently and cannot provide adequate cooling during high temperatures, which compromises the comfort and safety of all users of the facility.

All reproductive health and WIC clinical appointments at the downtown location will be postponed.

The Health Department will resume normal operations on Wednesday, August 28. In the meantime, we urge everyone to take the necessary precautions to stay safe, including staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activities, and seeking out air-conditioned environments.
