2 Delta employees killed in tire explosion at Atlanta airport

A tire on a Boeing 757 burst early Tuesday morning during maintenance work at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. According to the company and local authorities, two Delta employees were killed and a third was injured.

The incident occurred at approximately 5 a.m. on Tuesday when a tire burst during the removal of a Boeing 757-232 parked at Delta’s technical operations maintenance facility.

Further details about the circumstances of the incident were not immediately available, but a statement from Delta Air Lines confirmed that two of its employees were killed and a third was hospitalized with serious injuries.

“The Delta family is heartbroken by the loss of two team members and the injury of another,” the airline said in a brief statement. “We have pledged our full support to family members and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.”

The statement continued: “The Delta family is grateful for the quick response of first responders and medical teams on the scene. We are now working with local authorities and conducting a full investigation to determine what happened.”

Both the airport and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) declined to comment and referred media inquiries to Delta Air Lines. Flight operations at the airport are not affected.

The aircraft in question, with tail number N683DA, arrived in Atlanta on Sunday evening after a flight from Las Vegas.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said several agencies were on site to clarify the situation. “I extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased Delta employees,” he said.
