Closure Update #6: Emergency shelters at Keaʻau Armory and Pāhoa Community Center to close today; Gilma downgraded to tropical storm: Big Island Now

16:08 Tuesday Update: Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense says the emergency shelters at the Keaʻau Armory and Pāhoa Community Center will close today at 4:30 p.m. If you need assistance or want to report storm damage, call 808-935-0031 or visit the Civil Defense website.

Hurricane Gilma has been downgraded to a tropical storm and is not expected to have any significant impact on the island of Hawaii as it passes later this week.

If conditions change, additional notifications will be provided.

12:34 pm Tuesday Update: The Wai’ōhinu Transfer Station in Kaʻū will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday to collect solid waste caused by Hurricane Hone.

This year, the Hawaii County Department of Environmental Services has extended this service day to accommodate the increased demand for waste disposal and to ensure that residents have the opportunity to safely and efficiently clean up storm debris.

Wai’ōhinu Station will also maintain its regular Monday/Thursday/Saturday schedule.

Update from Tuesday, 9 a.m.: The Ministry of Education confirms that all schools are open today.

Hawaii County Parks and Recreation confirms that Mahua Kona Beach Park and Wharf in Kohala, Bayfront Soccer Fields and Carvalho Park in Hilo will remain closed.

All other parks and beaches are open.

The county has opened two emergency shelters to assist households experiencing extended power outages due to Hurricane Hone. The shelters are located at the Kea’au Armory in Shipman Park and at the Pāhoa Neighborhood Facility in Billy Kenoi District Park.

Tuesday update, 7:35 a.m.: The Hawaii Police Department reports that both lanes of Highway 11 between the 57 and 63 mile markers, from Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach to Whittington Beach Park in Kaʻū, have reopened to traffic.

19:04 Monday Update: Big Island Police report that one lane of Highway 11 between the 57-mile marker near Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach and the 63-mile marker near Whittington Beach Park in Kaʻū is now open to traffic.

Work on the road is ongoing.

Monday update, 7am: Bayfront Highway in Hilo and Highway 11 in Ka’ū near mile marker 59 are closed to traffic following flooding from Hurricane Hone over the weekend.

The Department of Education reports that Ka’ū High School, Pāhala Elementary School, Nā’ālehu Elementary School and Volcano School of Arts and Sciences in Volcano and Mountain View are closed today.

Due to flight cancellations during Hurricane Hone, additional flights have been scheduled to arrive and depart from Hilo International Airport today. Travelers should expect increased volume and allow at least 2 hours for security screening.

Akolea Road in Hilo between Pala’a Street and Mamaka Place is now open.

8pm Sunday update: Young Brothers provides an updated schedule for the rest of this week:

The departure from Honolulu to Hilo on Saturday has been postponed. The ship departed on Sunday and is expected to arrive on Tuesday.

A scheduled Monday sailing from Hilo to Honolulu has been postponed. The ship is now scheduled to depart on Tuesday and arrive on Friday. There are no changes to cargo acceptance at the Port of Hilo.

A barge scheduled to depart Honolulu for Hilo on Tuesday has been postponed. The barge is now scheduled to depart on Wednesday and arrive on Friday.

There are no changes to cargo acceptance at the Port of Honolulu.

There were no changes to the barge schedule from Honolulu to Kawaihae and Nāwiliwili on Kaua’i and Kahului on Maui on Monday.

There are no changes to the Tuesday schedule from Honolulu to Kaumalapau/Kaunakakai.

All freight restrictions have been lifted. All freight must be received within the normal cut-off times specified in Young Brothers’ freight acceptance/availability information.

For precautionary reasons, no livestock will be accepted at any port for the rest of the week.

Young Brothers will continue to monitor the impacts of Hurricanes Hone and Gilma on weather and ocean conditions and make further adjustments as necessary.

7:31am Sunday update: Reports of flooding have led to road closures throughout the Ka’ū District as Hurricane Hone brings heavy rains to the Big Island.

Hawaii Island Police are asking the public to refrain from traveling on Highway 11 between mile markers 69 and 63 due to dangerous road conditions caused by the storm.

Highway 11 at Kawa Flats is closed between miles 57 and 61.

Police are advising motorists to avoid the eastern end of Wood Valley Road as it is closed due to flooding. No alternative routes are currently available.

Highway 11 is also closed between mile marker 57 (Whittington Beach) and mile marker 63 (Punalu’u Beach) due to flooding. No alternate routes are available.

The County Department of Parks and Recreation has closed the Hilo Municipal Golf Course due to flooding and debris.

The County Department of Environmental Management has closed the Oceanview and Pāhala transfer stations.

Original post: As of 8 p.m. Saturday, Tropical Storm Hone was located southeast of the Big Island, about 105 miles south-southeast of Hilo.

According to the National Hurricane Center and the Central Pacific Hurricane Center, the storm is moving westward at 22.5 km/h.

The tropical storm is strengthening slightly, reaching near hurricane strength with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph.

Several road and park closures were reported due to the storm.

Road closures include Waipi’o Valley Access Road and Kohala Mountain Road due to a fallen tree at mile 17.

Further road closures may occur without warning.

All east-facing Hawai’i County beach parks are closed.

The Hele-On Bus Service has canceled its routes over the weekend. A list of canceled bus routes can be found on the County of Hawaii Civil Defense website at https://hawaii-county-civil-defense-agency-hawaiicountygis.hub.arcgis.com/.

Public emergency shelters are open at the following locations:

  • Ka’ū Herkes Gym, located at 96-1219 Kamani St. Pāhala.
  • Nā’ālehu Elementary School Cafeteria, 95-5545 Māmalahoa Highway in Nā’ālehu.
  • Pāhoa High School Gym, 15-3038 Pāhoa Village Rd. in Pāhoa.
  • Kea’au High School Library and Building G, 16-725 Kea’au-Pāhoa Rd. in Pāhoa.
  • Mountain View Elementary School Cafeteria, located at 18-1235 Volcano Rd. in Mountain View.
  • Waiākea High School gymnasium in Hilo, 155 W Kawili St.
  • Honoka’a High School and Intermediate School Cafeteria, located at 45–527 Pakalana St. in Honoka’a.

Anyone who wants to wait out the storm in a public shelter should stay there at this time. Pets are welcome in all shelters.

Those who must go to the evacuation centers must bring essentials. Families are responsible for their own bedding, food, water and medicine. Also, make sure you have your phones, chargers and other necessary items with you.
