MACOMB TOWNSHIP – The Macomb Township Board of Commissioners has changed its mind regarding the manner in which a property will be sold and announced its decision at its Aug. 14 meeting.

Trustees voted unanimously to change the method of sale for the home at 21560 23 Mile Road. The sale would no longer be conducted directly by the township, but rather through the township’s real estate agent, Pilot Property Group.

“When (Supervisor Frank) Viviano contacted the realtor about possibly having the home listed on the MLS website, they generously offered to list it themselves without charging us their fees,” said Stacy Smith, Macomb Township’s chief financial officer. “We will still have our normal closing costs that we would have if we ‘sold it privately.’ We thought since they have more experience and the purchasing department has never sold a home before, we thought this might be the best method.”

According to Viviano, Pilot Property Group deals primarily in commercial real estate, but after years of working with the municipality, it was willing to take on the home and waive the fee. The agreement relieves the municipality of responsibility for selling the home and leaves Pilot in charge of listing, showing and completing the sale of the home.

Trustees originally proposed selling the house itself at the July 24 board meeting. The house was purchased in 2021 for $195,000 because it was at risk of being damaged by the construction of a nearby pumping station. Since that work is complete and no structural damage has occurred — but at least $30,000 worth of mold remediation is needed — the township plans to sell the house as-is.

The trustees also approved the purchase of three mobile LED light towers.

“The lights will be used at Town Center Park for the Macomb Mustangs’ practice sessions as well as (during) our special outdoor events such as our Halloween Hoopla and tree lighting,” said Sal DiCaro, Macomb Township Parks and Recreation Director. “They can also be used as generators on site, which will be helpful in the event of an emergency.”

The total cost for the three lamps and shipping is $28,516.50. The lamps were purchased from Federal Contracts Corp. in Tampa, Florida.
