Think about food safety when shopping at the farmers market

For many, a weekly visit to the farmers market is a must. Markets can be found all over the country, both seasonal and year-round. Farmers markets offer a wide variety of fresh, local produce, including fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, and beverages. When shopping at the farmers market, it is important to be mindful of food safety to avoid foodborne illness.

It all depends on the temperature

Some farmers markets are only open seasonally during warmer months, and bacteria that cause foodborne illness love warm weather. At temperatures above 90°F, perishable foods have just an hour before bacteria can multiply dangerously and render food inedible.

When shopping at the farmers market, look for vendors who offer perishables, such as raw meats and soft cheeses, on ice, in a cooler, or with a refrigerated compartment. It’s best to bring an insulated bag or cooler with cold sources that will keep your perishables at a safe temperature below 40 degrees Fahrenheit during the time it takes to shop and travel home.

Pay special attention to meat and poultry

After purchasing raw meat and poultry, place it in a separate bag from ready-to-eat items like fruits and vegetables to avoid cross-contamination with harmful bacteria that cause foodborne illness. Juice from raw meat and poultry can sometimes leak out of the packaging, which can transfer bacteria to our fruits and vegetables or other ready-to-eat treats from the farmer’s market if they are not separated.

Be selective in choosing products

It’s important to choose fruits and vegetables that aren’t bruised or damaged, as this can provide an environment where bacteria can multiply and thrive. Whole fruits and vegetables can be displayed at the farmers market without refrigeration, but perishable produce like strawberries, lettuce, herbs and mushrooms should be refrigerated at home. Pre-cut or peeled fruits and vegetables must be refrigerated for safety, so only buy them if they are stored on ice or refrigerated at the market. Before eating, all produce should be thoroughly rinsed under running water.

Why reusable bags make sense

Reusable bags are a convenient and environmentally friendly way to take them to the farmer’s market. However, because these bags can harbor bacteria, dirt, and debris, they should be washed frequently with hot water and soap.
