Rents higher than average salaries for young Catalans

Young Catalans have to spend more than their entire salary on renting their apartments, according to a new study by the real estate platform pisos.com.

The study shows that the average price for renting an entire house has risen to 1,190.70 euros, according to July data.

This figure exceeds the average salary of the younger population by 140 euros, which, according to the Youth Emancipation Observatory, amounts to a net salary of 1,050.77 euros.

The report published by pisos.com warns that current wages “do not match house prices” and predicts that house prices “will continue to rise and it does not look like this increase will stop anytime soon”.

This situation can also be observed in other regions of Spain.

In the Balearic Islands (€1,615.35), Madrid (€1,556.34) and the Canary Islands (€1,149.3), young people have to spend more than their entire salary on rent.

On the other hand, the autonomous communities with cheaper rents are La Rioja (390.99 €), Castilla y León (453.60 €) and Extremadura (462.60 €).

Across Spain, the average rent for a 90 square meter apartment is 1,062.90 euros, 12 euros more than the average salary.
