Munich Airport celebrates 50 millionth passenger on flights to the USA – demand is rising rapidly

Rapid growth of connectivity in the US

When Munich Airport opened in 1992, there were 39 weekly flights to just five U.S. destinations. Today, there are 140 weekly flights, taking passengers to 14 different U.S. cities. This expansion reflects the increasing demand for transatlantic flights and Munich Airport’s strategic role as a major hub for long-haul flights.

Airline partners and important routes

Several major airlines contribute to Munich’s good connections to the USA. Lufthansa, American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines offer nonstop flights from Munich to major US cities, including Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Detroit, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, New York-JFK, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington-Dulles.

Lufthansa in particular plays a leading role and offers four daily flights to Boston, Los Angeles, New York and Washington with the Airbus A380. The most popular routes include several daily flights to Chicago, Charlotte, Denver, Newark, San Francisco and Washington-Dulles. On selected days, New York-JFK is also served twice a day.

Record passenger numbers and high capacity utilization

Munich Airport’s US flights have reached new highs: 44,000 seats are available in each direction each week. Seat occupancy is over 90%, indicating strong demand. In 2023, the airport exceeded the three million mark on US routes for the first time. Particularly noteworthy is that monthly passenger numbers have consistently exceeded pre-pandemic levels since June 2022, evidence of the rapid recovery and growth of international travel.

In July 2024 alone, over 355,000 passengers traveled between Munich and US destinations, underscoring the continued popularity of these routes.

A promising future for transatlantic travel

Munich Airport continues to expand its long-haul offering and remains an important hub for passengers travelling between Europe and the USA. The airport’s successful achievement of reaching the 50 million passenger mark underlines its importance as a hub for international travel and its ability to meet the growing demand for transatlantic flights.
