Car falls into Schuylkill River in Fairmount Park – NBC10 Philadelphia

A couple who police said were engaging in romantic activity early Wednesday morning drove their vehicle into the Schuylkill River in Fairmount Park just before sunrise.

According to police, dive crews were deployed after the vehicle was found in the waters of the Schuylkill River in the area of the 1900 block of Kelly Drive around 4:27 a.m. Wednesday.

Officials said the vehicle – a 2020 Range Rover – rolled into the water after it was parked on the side of the road and accidentally put into gear by a couple who were in the vehicle at the time.

A police spokesman told NBC10 that the two were probably “busy” when the vehicle was accidentally put into gear from park.

However, the two people – whose identities police did not provide – were able to escape from the vehicle before it rolled into the water and were uninjured, officials said.

On Wednesday morning, rowers could be seen gliding across the river near where the vehicle came to rest in the water while police attempted to remove the car.

At around 6:30 a.m., emergency services were still working to recover the vehicle from the water.
