Lansdale Police are asking the public for credible information regarding the tragic death of Lansdale’s beloved cat mascot, White’s Road Park Charlie, who was euthanized Monday after three years of life and changed the lives of people in the North Penn area with his adventurous spirit and charm.

Owner Kristen Ortiz said in her first announcement in the White’s Road Park “Charlie & Sonny” Facebook group on Monday that officials at Colmar Veterinary Hospital have indicated that the injuries Charlie suffered – a severed, broken spine with severed nerves and a bruised tail – could have been caused by a human. The group has gained 90 new followers since Monday.

In a Facebook post Wednesday morning, Lansdale police said their department was saddened by the death of Charlie, who had become a fixture at the park.

“It is unclear if Charlie’s cause of death was a terrible accident or something worse. If you have credible information about Charlie’s death, please contact us,” the announcement said.

“This cat lived his short life to the fullest, and I take comfort in that,” Ortiz wrote in her post. “He has had more adventures in his three years than most cats do in their long lives. I knew the risks of letting him roam free and I was comfortable with that decision because we always said he was ‘living his best life,’ but he should never have died this way.”

Ortiz said there was no evidence that Charlie was injured by anyone.

In her post announcing Charlie’s death, she wrote that the injuries suggested he was not hit by a car, but perhaps thrown to the ground or hit with something. She told North Penn Now on Tuesday that she had witnessed teenagers treating Charlie roughly in the past, even throwing rocks at him.

“All signs point to that, but could it have been something else crazy? Yes. All these Facebook posts demanding justice for Charlie. If anyone knows anything, I hope they come forward, but ultimately we’ll probably never know,” Ortiz said.

A representative for Colmar Vet said Tuesday the office does not comment on cases to the media, citing privacy concerns.

“We will not respond to that,” the representative said.
