Google’s latest line of Pixel 9 phones launched last week and there are pre-order offers available. Best buy is entering the market with an offer that is almost too good to be true.

There’s a trade-in deal currently circulating on Reddit at Best Buy that could potentially get you a new Pixel 9 or Pixel 9 Pro completely free. ZDNET took a look at the deal online to find out what the hype is about, and as it turns out, while this free offer doesn’t seem to be active anymore, select trade-in values may allow you to save hundreds of dollars on a new Pixel 9 series phone (in fact, some Reddit users have already snagged new Pixel 9 phones for under $200).

Plus, Best Buy is offering a $100 gift card with the purchase of the Pixel 9 or a $200 gift card with the purchase of the Pixel 9 Pro, so I tried the deal out for myself.

How it works

Pixel 9 Pro on the Best Buy website appear to be “coming soon,” so while you can still estimate your phone’s trade-in value, the website won’t let you checkout. The Pixel 9, however, is a different story. I have an iPhone 14 Pro (128GB) in Deep Purple for reference.

First I navigated to the Pixels 9 Purchase page on Best Buy’s website. Then I entered my phone’s information in the trade-in and save section of the website. Then I selected a Pixel 9 (128GB) in Obsidian and added it to my cart. Best Buy is offering me $630 for my iPhone 14 Pro, and sales tax is costing me $53. My total cost after trade-in is $222, plus I get a $100 gift card from Best Buy, bringing the total cost of a new Google Pixel 9 after trade-in to (checks notes). only $122 — Saved over $670 on the newly released smartphone. In addition to these significant savings, I’m also being offered three months of Google One 100GB for new subscribers. Best Buy is also offering me the option to pick up and trade in the device at a store of my choice on August 27th or have a new Pixel 9 shipped straight to my home the same day.

It’s also worth noting that Best Buy will charge your payment method for the full purchase price plus tax for the Pixel 9 and then refund you within 7-10 days for your final trade-in value, which is subject to change.

While I’m not sure if I should upgrade my phone just yet (I’d rather use it for a few years before getting something new), this offer certainly gives me something to think about. If you’re also looking to upgrade, you should to try it out while these great pre-order offers last.
