New York Jets surprisingly offer rookie defensive player back to division rivals

In a rare trade within the division, the New York Jets sent defensive back and return specialist Brandon Codrington to the Buffalo Bills for strategic reasons in exchange for late draft picks in the 2026 NFL Draft.

From the Jets’ perspective, this trade serves several important purposes. Codrington had a good preseason and showcased his potential with impressive averages of 17.9 yards on kickoffs and 19.6 yards on punts, showing his value on special teams. However, the Jets have a strong pool of defensive backs, leading them to conclude that Codrington’s contributions could be utilized more effectively on another team.

Conversely, the Bills are looking to bolster their special teams unit, especially given the departure of returner Andy Isabella. Codrington’s potential as a returner makes him a valuable addition to their roster, providing both depth and competition in the secondary, especially given the uncertain injury status of rookie Daequan Hardy and the offseason departure of longtime defensive backs Tredavious White, Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde.

For the Bills, the trade is a low-risk investment as they can trade late draft picks and explore Codrington’s potential without significant financial or personnel consequences.

Although rivals like to outdo each other, both sides were winners. The Jets free up a roster spot for another position that desperately needs to be filled and bolster their draft squad, while the Bills acquire much-needed young talent for their special teams and defensive backfield. Codrington also wins, as he makes a 53-man roster in his rookie year as a UDFA, where he has a real chance to play right away.
