Bicycle shop opens downtown – The Collegian

Bicycle shop opens downtown – The Collegian

A new bike shop, DO Bike and Fitness, opened its doors in May, offering Brookings a brand new line of services, bikes and fitness equipment.

The store is located at 1738 6th St, in Brickwood Plaza and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

DO Bike and Fitness, formerly known as Dakota Outdoors, has been in Aberdeen for over 60 years and is a staple in the community. Erik Dean of Aberdeen, owner of DO Bike and Fitness, purchased the business in 2011 after the previous owners retired.

“Personally, I enjoy cycling and I liked the shop… It’s been in Aberdeen for over 60 years now and is a staple in the community,” Dean said. “It was a good deal to buy it and keep it going.”

Dean’s interest in opening a new location in Brookings arose after Sioux River Bicycles & Fitness closed in 2017.

“We were looking into opening a store after Sioux River (Bicycles & Fitness) closed in 2017,” Dean said. “We liked Brookings, it’s a vibrant and growing community, so we wanted to bring a good bike shop back to town.”

DO Bike and Fitness is a full-service bike shop that carries brands like Trek, Electra, Borealis, Santa Cruz, and Salsa Cycles. They also offer trade-ins and discounted used bikes.

“We have all kinds of bikes for sale for the back-to-school season. We also have a lot of e-bikes, which are very popular and are a convenient way to get around town,” says Dean.

Local cyclist Mac Rosenwald rides his bike six to seven times a week for exercise and transportation.

“The two things I enjoy most about cycling are that I get to where I’m going faster… while also getting a lot of exercise,” Rosenwald said. “I haven’t heard of DO Bike & Fitness, but I’ll check them out soon; coincidentally, my current bike, which I inherited from my older brother, needs some servicing.”

Erick Stasa, manager of DO Bike and Fitness, has enjoyed interacting with the people here in Brookings.

“I’m new and have been here for three weeks. I’m enjoying working with my hands and learning a lot about fixing bikes,” Stasa said. “Brookings is very welcoming and inviting and I’m excited to connect with people… and show them that we’re here now.”

DO Bike and Fitness recently partnered with CrossFit Brookings to host a community bike ride that started at the store and went through Brookings. They announce future rides and other community events on their Facebook page.
