The Google Play Store (formerly Android App Market) used to allow users to download multiple app updates, but this feature has been missing for over a decade. Thankfully, this feature seems to have finally been revived.

9to5Google discovered the Play Store’s new ability to download and install multiple app updates at once. I can confirm that this option is available on my Pixel 7 Pro – see the screenshot below.

This feature limits you to downloading and installing no more than three app updates at a time. Any additional app updates in the queue will be marked as pending. Still, this is a big improvement over being able to download and install only one app update at a time.

It’s unclear why Google removed this option in the first place. Speculation from the time suggests that smartphone storage at the time delivered slow write speeds. Many modern phones have since moved to faster internal storage, including UFS and NVMe technologies, so it would make sense to bring this feature back if storage performance was the bottleneck.

The news also comes after the Play Store introduced the ability to download two new apps at once in April, but this limit has also reportedly been increased to three simultaneous downloads in line with the app updates.
