First severe weather warning for Thursday night

First severe weather warning for Thursday night

First severe weather warning for the night from Thursday to Friday, and the summer heat will soon give way to an autumnal feeling.

We’re expecting thunderstorms Thursday, but mostly after sunset. So the morning will be rain-free and warm, with temperatures starting in the mid-70s. We’ll get another hot day with highs in the 90s and a heat index in the 90s Thursday afternoon. There will be a light wind blowing out of the south at 5-10 mph.

We may see a few isolated thunderstorms here and there Thursday afternoon, but most of us will get through the day dry. A line of thunderstorms will move into northwest Missouri around sunset and move southeast into the night. Some of these earlier thunderstorms may be strong, with a level 1/5 risk of hail and winds north and west of Kansas City. These areas will also have the highest chance of rain.

The question is: How well will the line hold? It could collapse and not do much for the metro, but it will probably hold well enough to bring some storms Thursday night. The storms are weakening, so no severe weather is currently expected for Kansas City or places east of I-35. Rain is also tapering off significantly east of I-35, so those places will see fewer storms.

The rain will be slow to trickle down and will likely be felt in isolated areas on Friday morning. It will likely be dry in the afternoon. The drop in temperature is more important here, as highs will be much lower and will remain around 80 degrees on Friday.

This sets the stage for a wonderful Labor Day weekend, with highs of 80 degrees and sunny skies all three days. Enjoy!
