According to a company spokesperson, Sheetz plans to open its new store on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the Longmeadow Shopping Center in north Hagerstown.

The business at 1501 Potomac Ave. had several permits in place this week, but final inspections were imminent, according to Paul Fulk, director of neighborhood services for the city of Hagerstown.

The store was built where a Sears building used to stand. Sears moved out of the building over 19 years ago and relocated to the Valley Mall in Halfway. The Sears store at the Valley Mall closed in 2017.

The old Sears building essentially supported a portion of Northern Avenue, Fulk said. Before the building could be completely demolished to make room for the supermarket and gas station, workers built a retaining wall inside the old building.

Sheetz has opened several new stores in Washington County over the past few years and closed some older stores.

This is the second new Sheetz location in the county since late May, when a location opened along Dual Highway near Mount Aetna Road.

The regional convenience food chain, based in Altoona, Pennsylvania, is known for its “made-to-order, cross-genre food and beverages,” according to its website.
