From Lance Hart, Screaming landscape

As we approach the end of the busy 2024 summer season, it’s a good time to look back at some of the new creations that have provided the best wild and wet fun around the world and count down the best water park attractions of this year.

First, I would like to give honorable mention to a unique class of water slides that are always in motion. I am talking about some impressive new water slides that have been added Cruise ships launching this year. This notable list includes the launch of Utopia of the Seas in July, which offers three impressive slides: Cyclone, Supercell and Typhoon. Carnival Jubilee also launched this season and offers a small collection of three water slides and a small water play area for the kids.

And finally, soon in December, the Disney Treasure offers the latest version of the AquaMouse water coaster with a brand new storyline called “The Curse of the Golden Egg”.

What puts them all in the shade, however, are the new slides that will be added to the Category 6 water park on the new Icon of the seaswhose launch has been postponed to January 2024. Royal Caribbean says this is the largest water park at sea.

Icon of the Seas is home to six major waterslide attractions: Storm Surge (featuring a half-pipe feature hanging over the edge of the ship), Hurricane Hunter (family raft slide), Pressure Drop (vertical drop body slide), two Storm Chasers mat slides and the Frightening Bolt, the highest drop slide at sea. There is also a FlowRider Surf simulator.

Now let’s move on to the attractions on land.

The best new water park attractions 2024

1 Meryal Waterpark – Qatar

This amazing new water park concept in Qatar will finally open in 2024 after years of construction. It’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. A large number of WhiteWater’s park’s most spectacular slides are stacked in a huge structure at the end of a man-made peninsula.

The iconic tower is called Rig 1938 and stands an incredible 85 metres tall (278.87 feet). It is home to the current record holder for the world’s tallest water slide and also holds the record for the most slides (12) attached to a single tower.

There are six different levels to explore in Rig 1938 Tower, each of which houses the starting point of two of the tower’s impressive 12 slides. Several conveyors take the rafts to the correct levels, and so that guests don’t get too tired climbing stairs to reach all 12 slides, three elevators have been installed.

And if that wasn’t enough, the park has a full ground-level water park on the waterfront with a wide variety of slides, tubes and rivers to float down. This includes a rare slide wheel installation as well as a few amusement park-style rides: a spinning roller coaster and a log flume of Intamin that wind through this section of the park’s attractions.

2 The Rise of Icarus on Mount Olympus – Wisconsin, USA

WhiteWater tallest water slide in America The Rise of Icarus

Mt Olympus wanted to add America’s highest water slide to its water park for the 2024 season. The goal was the Daredevil’s Peak water slide in the private Perfect day on CocoCayThe park decided it needed to go one size bigger and, in collaboration with WhiteWater and the architectural firm Ramaker, created The Rise of Icarus tower.

The huge tower stands 44 metres high and offers five slides to choose from, but only those willing to climb to the top will experience “The Fall” down. Also new to the area is a new slide area for children with eight mini slides and a new lounge area for all spectators.

3 Emerald Forest near Silverwood / Boulder Beach – Idaho, USA

The Boulder Beach water park, attached to this Idaho theme park, is creating a massive 4-acre expansion area this season called Emerald Forest, which features a fun national park theme. The new expansion features new cabana areas for guests to relax in, new food and drink options, the Salmon Run kids’ slide area (with eight slides), and towering over it all is Eagle Hunt.

Eagle hunting is a pair of racing/dueling water coasters from ProSlide, each 920 feet long. It features three saucer turns and four uphill blasts, making it the longest duel water slide in the United States.

4 Stingray at O’Gliss Waterpark – France

This huge new creation by Polin is said to be the largest water slide in Europe. It features four different slides, all built into a massive structure that resembles a giant stingray. There is also a section with an enclosed themed queue that leads up to the giant structure.

Unlike most other water slides, nearly every inch of the Stingray structure is covered in an intense pattern, making it almost look like it has a structure.

5 Tassie’s Underwater Twist at Aquatica Orlando – Florida, USA

Aquatica Orlando Tassie's Underwater Twist

This is not a completely new film, but the Changes made to the park’s previous CannonBowl-style slides have changed the game here for the better.

When the park opened, the two open-topped bowl slides were known as Tassie’s Twisters. Over the past year, however, the bowls have been fitted with roofs and a full projection system has been installed inside, digitally painting the dome and the wall around visitors with realistic images that give the impression they are underwater and surrounded by a variety of marine life.

The impact of this whitewater rafting is breathtaking and I think it is something we should see more of in the future.
