Obituary for Terry Guyer Shuman | Lancaster, PA

Terry Guyer Shuman, 78

13 March 1946 – 19 August 2024

Terry Guyer Shuman died on August 19, 2024, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, after a brief illness. He was 78 years old. He was born on March 13, 1946, in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania, to Lester Shuman and Lila Hunter. Terry earned a BA in social sciences from Lock Haven University and worked as a high school history teacher before moving to the bustling community of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1973. It was a decision he never regretted. Terry joined the Eastern York School District as a guidance counselor, where he helped students shape the rest of their lives. It was at Eastern York that he met his future wife, Sharon Szabo, and eventually became director of the guidance department.

Terry earned two master’s degrees, including one in Deaf Studies from the prestigious Gallaudet University, where he was one of the first known people to hypnotize a deaf person.

Terry was an accomplished athlete and coach, particularly in the discus and shot put. He was a three-time PSAC discus champion (1965, 1967 and 1968) and co-founder of the Long and Strong Thrower’s Club in Lancaster. He was also an avid reader, especially books on history, science or the future. In his later years, he became interested in genealogy and wrote fiction as a member of a local writers’ club. He also loved his iPad.

Terry was sensitive and had an understanding of human nature, which made him the family’s go-to counselor in times of crisis or difficulty. He also had a hilarious sense of humor. His sons Sid and Sam fondly remember Terry taking them to the cinema five times to see Jurassic Park, but also introducing them to football, science fiction and history. Flan was his favorite dessert, cashews were his favorite snack and Harry Chapin’s Cat’s in the Cradle was his favorite song.

His family, friends, former students and colleagues as well as his fellow athletes will miss him very much.
