Cardinals could put experienced outfielder on waivers list if decline continues

Cardinals could put experienced outfielder on waivers list if decline continues

The St. Louis Cardinals picked up a very important win against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night, but they are still seven games back in the Wild Card race.

The deadline for players to be released so they can be eligible for the postseason with their new clubs is approaching, and the Cardinals could conduct such a workout this week.

On Twitter, Cardinals insider Jeff Jones suggested that St. Louis could be without a key veteran hitter.

“Today is the last day for MLB teams to place a player on the waivers list so he can be claimed for the postseason,” Jones wrote. “It will be interesting to see if the Cardinals make that decision with Tommy Pham, who has been pretty vocal about his desire for a chance at the playoffs.”

Pham was part of the deal that brought Erick Fedde to St. Louis and was signed in hopes of helping the Cardinals make a playoff push.

However, the Cardinals are slowly losing relevance and are unlikely to make the playoffs at this point. That could mean St. Louis places Pham on waivers for a chance to be signed by a rival club.

Pham was a key part of last year’s National League championship-winning Arizona Diamondbacks. Perhaps another team that isn’t as well-known could take a chance on the veteran outfielder and give him an opportunity to play in the postseason.

It will be interesting to see how the Cardinals approach the waiver period and if Pham is ultimately shipped off.
