Governor Cooper announces grants for park improvements in Sunset Beach, Wallace

SUNSET BEACH, NC (WECT) – The City of Sunset Beach will receive $500,000 and the City of Wallace will receive $400,000 for projects, Governor Roy Cooper announced Aug. 29.

A total of $17.9 million in grants were approved statewide for 46 park and recreation projects on August 23.

The Sunset Beach grant will go toward the Majestic Oaks Park Development project through the state Parks and Recreation Trust Fund. The Parks and Recreation Authority awards 30 percent of the PARTF’s total funds to local municipalities and counties each year.

“These awards through the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund and the Accessible Parks Grant will have a tremendous impact on communities across North Carolina by creating more parks, more trails and more accessible recreational activities,” Cooper said.

The Wallace grant is awarded through the Accessible Parks Grant program and will support accessibility improvements and an inclusive playground in Clement Park.

The program was allocated $12.5 million in the 2023 budget to provide grants for local parks and recreation projects that benefit people with disabilities. A total of $8.3 million was awarded to 23 projects in the first round of funding.

“North Carolinians love their parks and recreation areas,” said D. Reid Wilson, secretary of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. “These projects will improve the quality of life, promote health and strengthen the local economy.”
