Stop & Shop in Newton closes today – the first of eight Massachusetts stores to close

Stop & Shop in Newton closes today – the first of eight Massachusetts stores to close

The first of eight Stop & Shop stores in Massachusetts scheduled to close will permanently close its doors on Thursday afternoon.

The store at 165 Needham Street in Newton is scheduled to close at 3 p.m. today, according to Stephanie Cunha, a spokeswoman for Stop & Shop.

The Needham Street store is a “bfresh” location and has a smaller footprint than other Stop & Shop supermarkets.

The bfresh concept “is a smaller store in an urban environment,” said Cunha. “Due to our business model, we have decided that we will no longer support this format. We are focusing on continuing to grow the Stop & Shop brand – and investing in the remodeling of our Stop & Shop stores.”

The seven other Stop & Shop stores in Massachusetts that are scheduled to close would remain open through September and October, she said.

“Closing dates vary by store, but all affected stores will close before November 2,” Cunha said.

The following Massachusetts stores will be affected:

  • 932 North Montello St., Brockton
  • 36 New State Highway, Raynham
  • 341 Plymouth St., Halifax
  • 539-571 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury
  • 415 Cooley St., Springfield (stores at 1600 Boston Rd. and 1277 Liberty St., Springfield remain open)
  • 545 Lincoln St. Worcester (stores at 940 West Boylston St. and 949 Grafton St., Worcester remain open)
  • 24 Mattakeesett St., Pembroke (the store at 125 Church St., Pembroke remains open)

Cunha said customers would be informed well in advance of the closure, as the company will announce details of each closure several weeks in advance through store signs, weekly newsletters and emails to customers.

“One day they won’t show up and then it will be closed,” she said.

All branch employees will be given the opportunity to work at other locations, she said.

“Retaining our team of outstanding employees has been a priority for us and employees at all affected Stop & Shop stores will be offered other opportunities within the company,” she said.
