A woman from Winnipeg, Canada, thought she had gotten the best deal at a local thrift store, but upon closer inspection, she discovered that the item had significant defects.

In a video shared on TikTok in July under the username @msfili, poster Ashlee is seen browsing bags at a local thrift store when, out of nowhere, she spots a red leather bag that looks very familiar. When she opens the bag, Ashlee immediately notices that the label says Hermès. It was a complete shock to her, as the price on the bag was only about $9.

“It’s a Hermès,” she can be heard saying in the clip. “It has a little stain on the front, but it’s no big deal.”

Hermès bags are among the most luxurious in the world, with prices starting at $10,000 and reaching hundreds of thousands, depending on the model and features of the bag.

That’s why Ashlee couldn’t believe her eyes when she found the bag at a thrift store for such a low price. As it turns out, she shouldn’t have.

“Unfortunately, this bag turned out to be a fake. It was made of real leather and felt high quality,” Ashlee said. Newsweek“But I have already found real bags from Louis Vuitton and Chanel in the second-hand shop.”

Ashlee loves shopping in thrift stores because for her, every trip to the store feels like a treasure hunt.

“You never know what great things you might find! It’s a great way to restock your wardrobe and decorate your home on a budget. And it’s a great way to make some extra money by selling on Facebook Marketplace or eBay!”

Most users on TikTok thought the poster’s new find was a Hermès Birkin or a Kelly, both of which are iconic models. Not only are they among the most expensive in the world, but they are also so exclusive that you can’t just walk into the store and buy them.

Madison Avenue Couture says the designer only makes a very small number of pieces to preserve the exclusivity of these bags, so getting hold of one can be quite a challenge. There is usually a waiting list and many potential new owners compete for a Hermès.

If you’re lucky, you might find one in the boutique, but it might not be your preferred color or material, but you might have to go for it anyway; unless you’re a VIP customer and are personally invited to customize your very own piece.

British fashion says you should only buy a vintage Hermès bag from a reputable source. And it can take months or even years to get one in the store.

The video quickly went viral on social media, attracting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 1.1 million views and nearly 20,000 likes on the platform.

One user, Ersi, commented: “It’s a Birkin.”
