Swiss developer Silvio Rizzi has announced that the current version of his popular RSS reader application “Reeder v5” will be renamed “Reeder Classic”. The renaming comes as part of the development of a completely new version of the Reeder app, which is intended to offer significantly expanded functions. Reeder Classic will remain available for users who prefer the traditional RSS reader experience.

A central platform for content

The new Reeder app, which has been in development since the beginning of the year, will be able to subscribe to and display podcasts, YouTube videos, Mastodon posts and other content in addition to the existing RSS feeds. The aim of the further development is to offer users a central platform on which they can read, view and listen to all of their subscribed content. This will make Reeder a comprehensive tool for modern media consumption.

Parallel operation of both apps planned

In order to make the transition as smooth as possible for existing customers, Rizzi plans to offer Reeder Classic and the new version of Reeder in parallel for the time being. This means that users who prefer the classic RSS reader can continue to access their familiar environment. The exact release date of the new Reeder version has not yet been set, but Reeder Classic will remain fully usable until further notice.

With the announcement, Rizzi tried to take into account both the needs of long-time users and the requirements of the next generation of media consumers. The app is already in semi-public beta testing, but there are currently no beta spots available. Anyone interested in checking out the app before the official release should keep an eye on the developer’s Mastodon account. New beta spots are released there all the time.
