Formerly deported migrant arrested after teenager stabbed at baseball game

A previously deported migrant suspected of committing crimes in the United States since returning illegally was arrested in Indiana after a teenager was stabbed to death at her brother’s baseball game, police said.

Dimas Gabriel Yanez, 26, was arrested Sunday “after an intensive manhunt,” a day after a 14-year-old girl was stabbed in the hand with a butcher knife at the game in Lowell, Indiana, Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said on Facebook.

The attacker also attempted to stab the girl’s mother when she “tried to help her daughter,” who has since been released from the hospital following the “random” attack, authorities said.

Yanez was quickly identified as a suspect and the Sheriff’s Department warned in a series of calls over the weekend that he was “armed and dangerous.”

On Sunday, he was finally discovered running through a cornfield in the southern part of the county and arrested “after an intensive manhunt and eventual foot pursuit,” police said.

“It is believed that shortly before his arrest he was in the process of cutting his hair to change his appearance,” the sheriff said. Photos show that Yanez had cut off most of the thick, curly hair he wore in previous mug shots when he was led away in handcuffs.

The sheriff also said, “Investigators have determined that Yanez was deported to Honduras in 2018 and may have been involved in criminal activity throughout the United States since her illegal return to the country.”

“The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has been notified of his arrest,” the department said.

The update did not provide any details about previous crimes for which the suspect is being targeted or the crime scenes.

Yanez is in custody at the Lake County Jail. “The investigation is ongoing and we will release more details as they become available,” the sheriff said.
