US Open 2024: Jack Draper beats Alex de Minaur and reaches the semifinals

Draper’s run brings back memories of fellow Briton Emma Raducanu’s stunning victory at the US Open three years ago.

Like Raducanu, Draper reached the last four without losing a set and worked his way confidently through the draw.

But while Raducanu’s remarkable victory came out of nowhere, Draper’s performance comes after a year in which he has consistently demonstrated his long-touted talent.

Draper finished runner-up at Wimbledon as a junior and won a set against Novak Djokovic on Centre Court in his Grand Slam debut at the age of 19.

Due to injuries last year, he was not among the top 100 in the world just 12 months ago, despite reaching the fourth round in New York.

But this year he has been on a steady upward trajectory, becoming number one in the UK in June and now making a name for himself on the biggest stage.

After a quiet run to the last eight, he had to deal with the distractions of his own physical problems and those of his opponent, who was in big trouble at the end.

After the game-winning point, Draper remained remarkably calm, carefully rearranging his belongings rather than being overwhelmed by emotion – an indication that he feels there is more to come.

He will be a big underdog going into the match against Sinner or Medvedev, but history shows that something special can happen to the Brits in New York.
