Five teenagers were arrested in connection with a stabbing near a San Diego light rail station, authorities said Saturday.

According to the San Diego Police Department, officers responded to reports of a stabbing at 3200 Imperial Avenue in the Logan Heights neighborhood around 4 p.m. Friday.

“The victim, initially described as Hispanic and in his late teens, had a verbal altercation with the five suspects at the 32nd and Commercial streetcar stop,” police said in a statement. “As the victim walked down the stairs to Imperial Avenue, the group followed him, confronted him and stabbed him with an unknown weapon.”

Officers found the victim with at least one stab wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he died shortly thereafter, according to police officials.

The suspects were arrested less than two hours after the stabbing at 4700 Spring Street in La Mesa. They were booked into the juvenile hall on suspicion of murder. One suspect was 17, one was 16 and the other three were 15, authorities said. Their identities were not released because of their ages.

It was unclear whether the weapon was found.
