Royals expected to re-sign All-Star after Kansas City ‘struck gold’

Royals expected to re-sign All-Star after Kansas City ‘struck gold’

The Kansas City Royals were certainly busy last offseason and it paid off.

Kansas City lost 106 games last season and has spent a long time looking at free agents. The Royals have had to sign several pitchers and target experienced pitchers to increase their value, such as Michael Wacha and Seth Lugo.

Other teams passed on Wacha and Lugo because they were looking for other pitchers like Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Blake Snell. Wacha and Lugo have both been fantastic for the Royals and are a big reason why Kansas City looks like it will make the playoffs again.

However, after the season ends, the Royals face difficult decisions. Several important Royals players will be signed as free agents, including Wacha.

Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report compiled a list of each team’s biggest free agents and made a prediction on whether or not they would be re-signed. He predicted that the Royals would re-sign Wacha.

“Prediction: New signing,” Reuter said. “The Kansas City Royals hit the jackpot when they signed Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha in the offseason. While Lugo has a contract for next year, Wacha’s contract includes a club option for 2025 worth $16 million.”

With a 3.50 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP and 123 strikeouts in 144 innings — already his highest innings total since 2017 — Wacha is sure to turn down that option in favor of a multi-year deal and more money, but that doesn’t mean the Royals should end his time with the team. Another guaranteed year at the same price on a new two-year, $32 million contract might be enough to convince him to stay.”

Wacha has fulfilled everything the royals hoped for. Hopefully both sides can find a way to continue their partnership.
