Whoopi Goldberg criticizes “Dancing with the Stars” over Anna Delvey casting

Looks like not everyone will be cheering for Anna Delvey Dancing with the stars this season.

On Thursday, September 5, the co-hosts of The view weigh in on the convicted con artist’s booking on the ABC reality dance competition series.

Her criticism comes a day after Delvey’s casting was announced and news broke that she had been granted permission by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to compete for the mirrorball trophy despite being under house arrest.

This particularly did not please the presenter Whoopi Goldberg, who was not fooling herself when she admitted that DWTS And The view both are broadcast on ABC and therefore “we have to support the network.”

“I think back to all the families whose family members were arrested by ICE, who went to court to get their father or their mother or their brother back,” she said. “And this woman got permission to do that. I think there’s a reason for that. Is there a two-tier system here at ICE?”

Delvey, whose real name is Anna Sorkin, rose to notoriety for posing as a wealthy German heiress and using her social status to defraud wealthy people, banks and hotels. She was arrested in 2017 and convicted in 2019 of first-, second- and third-degree grand larceny and theft of services.

Her sentence included four to 12 years in prison, which was reduced when she was released for good behavior in February 2021. Shortly after her release, Delvey was taken into custody by ICE for violating the terms of her visa. She is living under house arrest in New York City while she fights her deportation case.

Sunny Hostin summed up Delvey’s legal problems and wondered “what the consequence” of her crimes would be. “A jewelled ankle bracelet – a federal jewelled ankle bracelet – and then an appearance on a television show?”

“We have a felon as our presidential candidate, why are we surprised?” said Sara Haines, referring to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who was found guilty in May on 34 counts of falsifying business records.

The memory even prompted Joy Behar to Dancing with the serious criminals spin-off. “I think that would be a huge hit,” she teased.

But all jokes aside, Delvey’s casting still left the co-hosts feeling frustrated.

“I’m here for reparation, not rehabilitation: someone who admits and takes responsibility for what they did wrong,” Alyssa Farah Griffin stressed. “I’m not convinced that this person did that. Cheaters tend to be cheaters.”

Goldberg, who often stays quiet when it comes to pop culture topics, then chimed in again. “She still owes people money. I don’t understand why she’s allowed to stay!” complained Goldberg – Behar said it was because Delvey was “pretty”.

“It kind of sucks, I’ve got to tell you,” Goldberg replied, connecting Delvey’s casting to the larger immigration debate. “You know, I like pretty people too, but I have to say, I listen to people complaining about what’s happening at the border and I listen to people complaining about who shouldn’t be here – so what the hell, man? How does that work?”

“This is a (fuck you) considering the many people who have tried to come back to this country and whose families have been torn apart,” the EGOT winner said.

When Behar pointed out that convicted felons had appeared on the show in the past – including Teresa Giudice, Lil’ Kim and Tommy Chung – Goldberg noted that they “didn’t wear an ankle bracelet.”

PEOPLE spoke to Delvey on Tuesday, shortly after she DWTS Casting has been announced.

She claimed that her request to film DWTS “10 days to get through the system and get everything approved” at ICE – so long that when the approval came, “the start day was already very close, so I basically flew to LA the next day and just thought, ‘Why not?'”

When asked if she expected backlash over her controversial casting, Devley said: “It’s just not that serious. If someone is that upset about being cast in a dance show, I don’t know what to say to them.”

Delvey will compete alongside her partner Ezra Sosa on the condition that she continues to wear her ankle bracelet. She said The Hollywood Reporter that her device would not affect her performance. “How would it affect my performance? It’s actually pretty light,” she said.
