Alex Morgan, American soccer star and Olympic gold medalist, announces retirement

Alex Morgan’s career as a competitive soccer player is over.

The Olympic gold medalist and longtime star of the U.S. women’s national team has decided to retire from the sport. “I’m retiring,” Morgan said Thursday in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter).

“I have so much clarity about this decision and am so happy to finally be able to tell you. It has been a long time coming and this decision was not easy. But at the beginning of 2024, I felt in my heart and soul that this would be the last season I would play football.”

Morgan will end her illustrious USWNT career with 123 goals, which puts her in fifth place on the all-time list.

She finished her USWNT career with 123 goals, which ranks fifth all-time, and 53 assists, which ranks ninth in U.S. history. The U.S.’s record in games in which Morgan played is 177 wins, 15 losses and 32 draws.

She scored goals in 86 of her 224 international appearances (which ranks ninth in U.S. history), started 158 times, and captained the U.S. 23 times during that time. In the 86 games in which Morgan scored, the USWNT never lost, achieving 76 wins and 10 draws.

Morgan was a member of the victorious U.S. teams that won the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015 and 2019.

“I grew up on this team. It was so much more than just soccer,” Morgan said in a statement from the U.S. Soccer Federation.

“It was the friendships and unwavering respect and support for one another, the tireless commitment to investing in women’s sport worldwide and the defining moments of success both on and off the field. I am incredibly honoured to have been able to loan the crest for more than 15 years.”

“I’ve learned so much about myself during this time and much of that is thanks to my teammates and our fans. I’m incredibly proud of the development of this team and will forever be a USWNT fan. While my desire to succeed has always driven me, what I’ve received in return has been more than I could have ever asked for or hoped for.”

Morgan also announced that her family will be growing in the coming months.

“I’m pregnant. As unexpected as this was, we are overjoyed. For me, family means everything. Without my family and my husband, who have built me ​​up, motivated me, encouraged me and supported me and made sacrifices for me over the last 15 years as a professional athlete, I wouldn’t be here.”

Morgan’s last game is scheduled for September 8th.
