Chiefs get away with cheating timeout before important Ravens red zone play

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to do innovative things never seen before in the NFL.

While fans wait for Patrick Mahomes to throw a behind-the-back pass in a regular season game, they are confronted with something no one has ever seen in an NFL game: an assistant coach calling a timeout.

There was some confusion late in the second quarter when the Baltimore Ravens ran out of field goal units before deciding to give Lamar Jackson and the offense one more chance at the end zone. During the confusion, the Chiefs defense was caught off guard and Kansas City needed a timeout. Enter defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who sprinted down the sideline to call the timeout.

The problem is that NFL rulebook says only the head coach can call a timeout. Spagnuolo apologized and laughed, and he was awarded the timeout, somehow allowing the Chiefs to avoid a penalty.

Anyone who is tired of the Chiefs winning two Super Bowls in a row would be forgiven for complaining that Kansas City got away with one here. The good news is that the Ravens still managed to score a field goal and cut the lead to three at halftime.

The bad news is that the Chiefs have found another man who can do it all.
