Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan has died

After authorities confirmed the death of US rapper Rich Homie Quan on Thursday, there were numerous expressions of condolence.

The artist, who was in his early 30s, died in Atlanta, Georgia, the Fulton County coroner said.

The cause of death is unknown. Local health authorities said an autopsy is planned for Friday.

Rich Homie Quan, whose real name was Dequantes Devontay Lamar, was one of Atlanta’s most famous modern rappers.

He became a big name in the rap scene in the mid-2010s and had mainstream success with his 2013 hit “Type of Way”, which was followed by the popular “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” in 2015.

He has been nominated for several BET and BET Hip Hop Awards, including Best New Artist and the People’s Champ Award.

He has also collaborated with several big names in the industry, including 2 Chainz, Young Thug, Gucci Mane and Trinidad James.

Rich Homie Quan was born in October 1989, the eldest of three siblings, and grew up in a single-parent home, according to Atlanta concert venue Masquerade. He originally wanted to be a baseball player, but eventually turned to music.

He spoke openly about his early years in several interviews and spent 15 months in prison in 2011 for his involvement in a series of burglaries.

After his release from prison, he devoted himself entirely to his music and became a big name in the rap scene in the mid-2010s.

Since his death was announced, condolences for the artist have poured in from across the rap world.

Singer Jacquees was one of the first to pay his respects. “Rest in peace my brother Rich homie Quan,” he said on X. “I love you forever,” he added, calling the rapper a “legend” in a subsequent post.

2 Chainz posted a tribute on Instagram, saying, “Damn little brother we were just talking about making a video, special prayer for you and your family, and pray for anyone struggling with anything, my condolences brother.”

Rapper Quavo also posted on Instagram and wrote over a picture of himself, Rich Homie Quan and several other artists: “May God be with us, I never thought this would be a part of our journey.”

Sound engineer Alex Tumay, who has worked with Rich Homie Quan over the years, said the artist was “one of the nicest people I’ve ever worked with and a true artist. Absolutely devastating news. RIP.”
