TRANSCRIPT OF THE MISSION:
A year ago, a life was taken at this intersection where I stand, and neighbors don’t want to see any more people killed. I’m Ashley Engle, your Havana neighborhood reporter. I’m talking to neighbors about why they think this intersection is so dangerous and what they want to see resolved.

The intersection of Highway 90 and Lanier RD.

“The last accident with injuries was yesterday”

“A dangerous nightmare”

Since 2022, seven accidents have occurred at this intersection. In one of these accidents, a student from Robert F. Munroe University died.

“Since the fatal accident, we have worked very closely with the Florida Department of Transportation. We are trying to take as many safety measures as possible.”

Andy Gay is the principal at Robert F. Munroe. He told me that the school also works with the Florida Highway Patrol to monitor drivers’ speeds.

Neighbors tell me they want a change in speed limits or the installation of traffic lights.

Currently the speed limit in this area before the school zone is reduced from 65 mph to 55 mph. Subsequently the speed limit will be reduced from 55 mph to 35 mph.

“There’s a lot going on in this area, as you can see, because we’re out here. We have trucks and cars.”

Patricia Jefferson-Shaw of the Florida Highway Patrol tells me that peak traffic times are typically 8:00 a.m. when school starts and 3:30 p.m. when school lets out.

Neighbors like Rick use this intersection frequently, but during these times it is almost impossible to use.

Rick and others demand change.

“Don’t wait, it’s too dangerous.”

The Florida Highway Patrol says patrol officers are stationed at this intersection to slow drivers down during school zone hours.
